BAD REVIEW: Garnier Summer Body

I'm always on the look out for new fake tan products to try out, and when I stumbled across Garnier's Summer Body, I was really excited to try it out.

Summer Body is a gradual daily tanning lotion which builds up a natural looking tan. I have used gradual tanning lotions in the past, but have always been keeping my eye out for one which doesn't have that tell-tale 'biscuit' smell - which Summer Body doesn't! With Apricot extract, and a really fruity fragrance, I was really happy with my purchase.

I arrived home and after a shower that evening, I covered myself from head to toe in the product. I went to bed, only to wake up in the morning covered in the most horrific rash ever!

Never in my life have I had an allergic reaction to any product. My skin isn't sensitive or prone to break outs, so this rash was truly mortifying for me.
All of my face, neck, chest, arms, torso and legs were covered in what can only be described as wart-like itchy red bumps. It looked vile. The rash was itchy and sore, unlike anything I have ever had before in my life.
I immediately took some Piriton to help ease the itching, which didn't work.

I tweeted about my allergic reaction on Twitter, and received a huge response of people who have experienced the exact same thing, along with comments from girls saying they had complained to Gariner and their customer service had been shocking. Garnier had simply dismissed their complaints with comments along the lines of "It must be your skin that is super sensitive."
Erm, no Garnier, it must be your product, to say this many people have experienced the same thing as myself.

Even two weeks down the line, the rash still hasn't cleared up. I'm now left with dry patches of skin, that is peeling with open sores. I can't put anything on it to soothe it - even E45 cream makes it become angry again.

{Photos are taken 2 weeks after the usage of Garnier Summer Body}
As you can see it still looks horrendous.

I'm warning you all to STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT!

If this has happened to you, please state below in the comments as I shall be sending this link directly to Garnier via email. Thank you.

  1. Just wanted to leave a comment to say that I'd been using summer body for about a week and then around a week ago I developed a rash similar to yours! My rash is still really red and products trying to soothe it make it worse, sudocrem has been my only savior so far!
Until I read this I just put it down to a heat rash, like you I have never had sensitive skin at all and never react to anything... I am not allergic to any tanning or skin products that I have ever tried, this post has made me wonder if it's the garnier!
Sorry to hear about your experience, it's not nice at all xx

  2. Yes it happened to me too only bought it a week ago, the rash came about 2 days after on my chest neck and creases of my arm. I was going on holiday at the weekend aswell which is gutting because the rash was so bad on my chest I had to constantly wear a scarf.. it still hasnt gone yet. Im like you Iv always tried different tanning products, spray tan, mouse, wipes, instant, gradual but this is the only one Ive ever had a reaction too. Ive messaged them on facbook and they said to message them contact details. I have and they havent got back to me

  3. I've used this product without any kind of rash, it's a fantastic gradual tan, maybe you're allergic to a product, and if so it's nothing that can be done from Garnier as it's not their fault you're allergic! Like they always suggest when trying new products on your body always do a patch test.

  4. I have also taken a rash. Never taken a reaction to any cosmetic/health & beauty product before and I have never had any skin conditions. This is not an isolated case. It is all over the web.

  6. Me too! I had bought a new shower wash the very same week and thought it was that that had caused it. I changed shower gel and moisturised with aqueous cream until I'd used the tub up. I then used Garnier again and, surprise surprise, got the rash right back. No wonder this stuff is cheap as chips at the moment!

  7. Not allergic to anything in my life until now! Used loads of different tanning product's this one gives me patches of sore, red raw angry rash. Very painful. Nothing helps or soothes it.

  8. Just used this product the other day and have broken out with a skin rash all over my stomach and shoulders. I have never had a rash like this and have only ever had heat rash once before. I thought thats what this was until I looked up about the garnier Summer Body. I have sent garnier an email but dont expect a reply. There should be a warning on the label to say may cause alergic reaction as many people have been complaining about rashes and other forms of allergys to the ingredients of it. I just hope for garniers sake that this rash goes as soon as possible or they will have a case on there hands from me.

  9. Same thing has happened to me, i've never had a rash like this! I've just spend half an hour desperately trying to get it off my skin and soothing myself in cold water. I've used other tanning moisturisers before and never had a problem but garnier summer body? Now that I have washed and scrubbed I can see im completely covered when I just thought it was on my neck and shoulders. I feel hot and itchy and it looks terrible :(

  11. I got a rash from this product 2 days after using it. The rash only appears around the creases on my arms and no where else. But, still it isn't nice to look at and is very uncomfortable. I thought it was just my skin but I have never had a reaction from tanning products before so I found it strange.

  14. I agree with all the above comments, I was using the cream for about a week then my eyes underneath went wrinkled swallen and sore which spread to my eyelids! I thought it was a new shampoo so binned it. A few days later I can out with a rash on my neck and insides of my arms. I took a antihistamine and within a hour I could feel the soreness going and the rash started to fade within a couple of days while using aqueous cream. I yesterday used my summer body cream again and straight away felt my eyes sting woke up this mornin to the rash on my arms again!!. Like most people who have commented I also have never had a allergic reaction to any beauty products I dye my hair and use fake tan all the time!!

  19. If only I read this sooner Tried it last week but thought it was heat rash as it was a HOT weekend. Treated it as such and applied Garnier again and now my neck is covered in a rash/itchy/sore. Thank god I found this blog I thought I was just me. I’ve never ever had a reaction before to creams.

  21. I used this last night and have come out in the most horrendous itchy spots that looks like heat rash!!! It’s driving me crazy! I used the spray mist and was totally fine so I thought I’d give this a go! I wish I never did!

  22. Used this a week ago , eyes , neck , head and creases in arms all been affected, my face is still really itchy on strong antihistamine every day , binned the product won’t use that make again with anything 😡

  23. I have been using this product for about 2 weeks now, at first no signs of rash. Have only applied 3/4 times. Now have the worst rash/sore I’ve ever experienced on my thighs and in the creases of my knees. I have less painful noticeable rashes in creases of my arms also. I think it’s where there is a build up of product coming into contact with clothes that causes the reaction. So glad I found this blog. Nothing soothes it!! Did anyone find any remedies?

  24. I recently purchased this product fantastic results however 3/4 days later I also have come out in a horrendous rash. I did a patch test but unfortunately was no use as it’s taken a few days to react. Rash is on the crease of elbow and around the neck area.
Only baby Dove moisturiser is helping with the dryness as E45 was unbearable on the skin. Avoid this product.

  25. I'm in exactly the same boat. Woke up with a very red, inflamed, itchy rash on my neck, stomach and creases of my arms. It looks horrendous. I do not have sensitive skin and will never ever again use this product. And the bottle says "for sensitive skin"!? Yeah right!
